How One Influencer Changed the Fashion World

It is no secret influencers drive current beauty, fashion, and lifestyle trends. In one of my past blogs, I talked about how one dress blew up the internet. In this blog post, I want to highlight how one influencer, Emma Chamberlain, changed the fashion world for the better.

Chamberlain uploaded her first YouTube video in 2017. She quickly began getting views and started to establish a large following. I started watching Chamberlain’s videos in 2017. I loved her early videos because she was relatable. Everything she did, I wanted to do too. In one of her videos, she created a fake Gucci t-shirt. She used a plain white t-shirt and drew Gucci’s logo on it. Shortly after, my friends and I made the shirt as well. (We sent the photo directly through Instagram, and she responded to us!) This was the start of taking over the young fashion world.

In many of her videos, she goes thrifting. She would take her camera to the thrift store and do hauls. As her videos were blowing up, the thrifting trend blew up with her. People would follow every trend she does, and if that means shopping sustainably, people will do it. My friends and I quickly followed Chamberlain and began thrifting as well. I began to fall in love with it, and now I thrift all the time. By making sustainability trendy, people are continuously shopping second-hand and encouraging others. Some of my best pieces have come from thrift stores, which convinces me to thrift often. The power of thrifting is something that many people underestimate.

As Chamberlain continued to gain millions of followers, she was the main driver of fashion trends. Anything Chamberlin wore, people would search everywhere to find that item or a dupe. There are Instagram accounts dedicated to Chamberlain’s closet that highlight every single piece she wore in her latest Instagram post and where to buy it.

Today Chamberlain has over 16 million followers. She has a partnership with Louis Vuitton and has attended multiple fashion weeks. She drives every fashion trend and is continuing to become more famous. Many influencers have followed Chamberlian’s lead by shopping secondhand and creating their clothes on YouTube. Many young people worship influencers, and if influencers use their platforms to spread awareness on sustainability and other social issues, we can make a difference in the world.
