The Reality of Wardrobe Warehouse

It’s no secret that influencers and celebrities have mass amounts of clothing erupting out of their apartment-sized closets. By studying their social media platforms, TV shows, and YouTube channels, we can learn a lot about someone’s life. It’s rare for celebrities to be shy when showing off their curated dream closets–I know I would do the same. But, as I sit and watch these videos, I wonder if they wear any of their clothes. Do these amazing, one-of-a-kind pieces sit in their closet forever? Do they walk around their house in their 2018 Met Gala dress?

In an episode of “The Kardashians,” reality star Kim Kardashian takes viewers on a trip through her wardrobe warehouse. Separate from her colossal walk-in closet, this warehouse contains over 30,000 pieces of clothing. Boxes upon boxes pile over each other, overflowing with clothes. After hearing about her massive wardrobe–I wondered if these clothes would ever be worn again–were they even worn more than once? I quickly realized that these items were likely left to collect dust.

The minute this episode aired, Kim Kardashian’s social media platforms filled with comments attacking the reality star for all of the waste. While I don’t agree that attacking Kim Kardashian is productive, I do agree she needs to be educated on how to better her sustainability efforts. When you have such an access amount of clothing and constantly receive new pieces, I don’t see the need to hold onto such a large collection. Which, I agree with the internet. I don’t see a need for her to have so many clothes that she is not even wearing.

As the scandal emerged, I immediately started to imagine what I would do as a member of Kim Kardashian’s PR team. In the spirit of sustainability and the upcycle of clothing, a newsworthy event would be a Kim Kardashian auction. At this event, Kardashian would host a gala to celebrate and commemorate all of her work, showcasing her most iconic pieces. She would then donate part of the proceeds to an organization that provides clothes to those less fortunate. By hosting this event, Kardashian can give back to a worthy cause while benefiting her reputation and brand image–since she now owns her clothing line, Skims. This event would not only benefit Kim’s reputation, but it would give back to a good cause.

With this campaign, Kardashian shuts down her haters and gives back to a good cause. I believe that celebrities and influencers could benefit from proper education on sustainability because many harbor mountains of unworn clothes.
